The letter and its enclosure relate to the wounding and subsequent death of a sailor from Kutif [Al-Qaṭīf] by the crew of a boat from Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi]. The incident took place off the coast of Al-Qaṭīf. Jones sent the British Agent at Bahrain in investigate the incident. Enclosed is a translation of a letter (folios 59-60) from Jones to the Shaikh of Abu Dhabi [Sayid bin Khalīfah], dated 21 October 1856, in which Jones sets out to act as mediator in the dispute, demanding compensation of at least 600 dollars from Shaikh Zayid, or otherwise what Jones describes as “Arab Law must take its course.”
