The letter and its enclosures relate to the plunder at Sharjah of the cargo of a vessel by members of the Wahhābī A follower of the Islamic reform movement known as Wahhabism; also used to refer to the people and territories ruled by the Al-Saud family. tribe. Jones’s letter is a covering letter, enclosing the following letters:

1. The translated purport of a letter (folio 72) from Sheikh Sultan ben Suggar [Sultan bin Saqr], chief of Rusul Khymah [Ra’s al-Khaymah], to Jones, dated 16 January 1856, stating that the vessel had already been shipwrecked, but that he will request his subjects to return any cargo plundered;

2. The translated purport of a letter (folio 73) from the British Agent at Sharjah [Hajjī Yaqoob], to Jones, dated 15 January 1856, which is a report of Yaqoob’s meeting with Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr, and the demand for compensation or the return of stolen goods;

3. The translation of a letter (folio 74) from Jones to Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr, dated 11 February 1856, written in response to Shaikh Sultan’s own letter (folio 72), warning that the British will take action against the people of Sharjah if he does not assume liability for their actions.
