About this record
- Content
The letter and its enclosures relate to Jones’s recent tour of the Gulf. Jones’s letter focuses on discussion of the present conflict between Shaikh Sultan ben Suggur [Sultan bin Saqr] of Ras al Khymah [Ra’s al-Khaymah] and the tribes of Himreyah [Ḩamrīyah], in which the Resident holds little hopes of Sultan bin Saqr committing to any peace agreement. Jones adds that, elsewhere in the Gulf, relative peace prevails. The enclosure to the letter (folios 105-07) from Jones to Hajee Yacoob [Hajjī Yaqoob], the British Agent at Sharjah, dated 25 May 1856, containing various instructions relating to the disposal of slaves, restitution of seized vessels, payment of compensation. Appended to the letter is a copy of a short note (folio 107v) from Jones to Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr, dated 24 May 1856.
