Translation of letter dated 8th June 1944- from His Highness
Shaikh Sir Salman bin Hamad al Khalifah, K.C.I.E., Ruler
of Bahrain, to Major T.Hickinbotham, C.I.E., O.B.E.,
Politieal Agent, Bahrain.
After Compliments.
With reference to our discussion yesterday
on the subject of the agreement between us and the Shaikh
of Qatar, I am sending you the following reply
M The Ruler of Bahrain and the Ruler of
Qatar agree to the restoration of friendly and good
neighbourly relations between them as it was in the past.
Zubara area remains for Al Khalifah, open to them and
thei r houses for them. This is from consideration and
reverence to Al Khalifah. Their followers can have access
as they used to do before. The Ruler of Bahrain on his
part undertakes not to do anything that might harm the
interests of the Ruler of Qatar and affect his prestige.
Also the Ruler of Qatar undertakes not to do anything that
might affect the interests of the Ruler of Bahrain. 11

This request - to which Shaikh Salmān bin Ḥamad Āl Khalīfah, the ruler of Bahrain objected - came in the context of tensions between Qatar and Bahrain over ownership of Zubarah 18th-century town located 105 km from Doha. situated on the Qatari peninsula.
The file contains a number of letters in Arabic sent from Shaikh Salmān bin Ḥamad Āl Khalīfah, to Tom Hickinbotham, Britain's Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain.
