CQMFIDENTTAt,
Enclosures to paragraph 32 of Despatch No. 79 {Army), dated the 3 rd fuh
jgr 3 . ' y
Enclosure No. I.
No. 60/1462-XIV-N., dated Bombay, the 21st February 1913. '
From His Excellency Rear-Admiral R. H. Peirsb, C.B., M.V.O., Com-
mander-in-Chief, H.s Ma,esty' s Ships ana Vessels, East Indies Sqiadro”,
To—The Secretary to the Government of India, Marine Department.
I have the honour to forward herewith for the information of His Excellency
the Viceroy and Governor General of India in Council, a list of the rifles
ammunition, etc., captured during the Arms Traffic Operations in the Persian
Gulf, which are at present lying in the Naval Ordnance Depot, Bombay.
2. It is understood that all the arms and ammunition captured by His
Majesty’s Ship “ Fox” in November 1909 were to be retained pending the settle
ment of the question as to_ their restitution to His Highness the Sultan of
Masqat. My records on this subject are, however, not very clear and end with
my predecessor’s telegram No. 63 of 20th May 1910, (in reply to Government
of India telegram No. 901-M. of 18th May 1910) reporting that these arms were
stored at Bombay.
3. It is not known for what reasons the rifles, etc., captured by His Majesty’s
Ship “ Perseus ” in May 1910 and by His Majesty’s Ship “ Hyacinth ” in January
rp 11, were retained. The approval for retention in the case of the former was
contained in Government of India telegram No. 1058-M. of 20th June 1910.
4. Should the arms, etc., captured by “Fox” be no longer required, it is
proposed that all non-serviceable rifles and ammunition and the 80 old bayonets
be destroyed.
5. I have the honour to enquire whether the serviceable rifles of prohibited
bore and ammunition can be put to any use by the Government of India, and, if
so, that early instructions may be given respecting their disposal as otherwise
they will rapidly deteriorate having recently been removed from the packing in
which they have previously been kept.
I have been given to understand that the *45' / Martini Henry rifles are
identical with those used by the Armed Police in India and it is thought that the
remainder of the rifles might perhaps be utilised for Training Corps or other
useful purpose.
