CAL—BAL
The Shah Ndmeh of Firdusi mentions the Baluchis as a tribe occupying
Gilan during the reign of Naushirvan (about A.D. 600), and apparently they
migrated to Baluchistan via Sistan. They are thus in all probability an
Aryan race of ’Arab descent, now intermixed with Persian blood, and in
habiting the same district are the Brahuis, of Dravidian origin, who must
have come from the plains of Mesopotamia in pre-historic times.
Besides these, there is a medley of tribes of different nationalities who
have settled in the country at various dates, from ancient down to modern
times. For instance, the Gichki are the descendants of a Rajput family
who came from India in the seventeenth century; the Bolidit are ’Arabs
from Masqat ; the Maliks are descendants of the Saffar dynasty; the
Naushirvanis were driven out of Isfahan; the Bezanju are a branch of the
aboriginal Brahui; the Shahzadehs claim descent from the princes of
Kandahar ; the Rais are the descendants of the Ghazz family ; the Meds
were pirates; the Darzadehs serfs ; the Luris gypsies; while the Wardilis
immigrated from Sind.
Many of these now live a settled life, others are but nomads, as is shown
in the following table, which was tabulated in 1903 {see also Article
“ Baluchis ”).
