KALEH-I-JUNABAD—
A ruined foit m iSurliad, ubout miles west of Ladls, and ^ mile to tlie
north of the road from there to Galugam—(BW, 1899.)
KALEH-I-KAZl—
A stage on the Kirman-Bandar Abbas route, 131| miles south from
Kir man, and 46f miles south of Baft; 21 miles north of Daulatabad.
Elevation about 5,500 feet. A village of 60 houses and huts in a valley
surrounded by hills ; there are a few T orchards and a small amount of culti
vation with flocks. Supplies are scant; fuel plentiful; water abundant and
good, brought by qanats from the hills. Camel-grazing plentiful along
the valley. Livestock: 40 camels, 90 donkeys, 150 cattle and 400 sheep
and goats.— (Brazier-Creagh, 1894 ; Slier Jang, 1902.)
KALEH-I-NAU—
A square fort, about 25 miles south-east of Birjand, Khorasan, and 600
or 700 yards due south of Mud. It was formerly the residence of Mir Alam
of Kain, but is now unoccupied and in a state of decay. Under its walls
are a^ zirishk, or barberry plantation, and a few cypress trees, also a small
mazr’a, watered by one kdrlz.
The fruit of the barberry is made into a preserve, and also exported in
the dry state as currants. The root of the bush is used as a yellow dye,
and also as an astringent in diarrhoea.— (Bellew; 'Abbas 'All, 1907.)
KALEH-I-QANTAQ (Kirman)—Lat. 27° 3U 23"; Long. 57° 50' 21"; Elev
1,413'.
A halting-place on the Rigan-Minab road, the eighth stage, 124J miles
from Rigan and about 15 J miles to the next stage, Kahuri-Daraz It is
the site of what was once a large city, as can be seen from the remains of
burnt brick foundations, worked and ornamented tiles, pieces of china,
etc., which still exist. It is said to have belonged to Karm Shah some twm
or three centuries ago. Numerous lahns and kdrizes existed here once,
but all have now gone to ruin, although several were lined with
pipes throughout—pipes of an elliptical section, made of burnt clay,
similar to those made in the villages north of Rigan. There is no perennial
i water, but plenty in the neighbourhood; as also grass, wood and
camel-grazing.— {Jennings.)

A village of Persian Baluchistan, the third stage from Kalat, on the road to

The item is Volume IV of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1910 edition).

The volume comprises that portion of Persia south and east of the Bandar Abbas-Kirman-Birjand to Gazik line, with the exception of Sistan, 'which is dealt with in the Military Report on Persian Sistan'. It also includes the islands of Qishm, Hormuz, Hanjam, Larak etc. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and the whole district of Shamil.

The gazetteer includes entries on villages, towns, administrative divisions, districts, provinces, tribes, halting-places, religious sects, mountains, hills, streams, rivers, springs, wells, dams, passes, islands and bays. The entries provide details of latitude, longitude, and elevation for some places, and information on history, communications, agriculture, produce, population, health, water supply, topography, climate, military intelligence, coastal features, ethnography, trade, economy, administration and political matters.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

The volume contains an index map, dated July 1909, on folio 323.

The volume also contains a glossary (folios 313-321).
