line being the watershed of the Kacha Kuh from Kuh-i-Malik Siah to
Mirjawa {q.v.) and thence along the course of Dar-i-Ghiaban and Talab

north by the Kirman Desert and Sistan. With the exception of the
eastern border, none of these boundaries are at all clearly defined,—one
district merging into another. It consists of a high-lying plateau with an
average elevation m the centre of some 5,000 feet, flanked by two parallel

It is supposed that in Eocene times the sea flowed over the whole of

that the prophet Jonah was cast up at Yunsi, some three stages to the south
of lurbat, where he hid for many days under a gourd. A|ain, further to
the east on the Herat road, is a village called Langar .(anchor or port),
which possesses a tradition that it was once a harbour on a great inland sea.
These two instances, among others, point to the probable fact that there

tjarhad is extremely hilly, but possesses a good water-supply, fair
grazing and infinite possibilities for improvement; while there are many
evidences especially in the valleys of the Kuh-i-Taftan, that in former
times it had reached a high degree of development and even civilization.
