ZIA-ZTA
ZlARAT—
The present administrative centre of the Shamil district, being the resi
dence of the Kalantar ; it is situated near the left bank of the Jamush
stream 28 miles north-east of Bandar Abbas and 19 miles west by south
of Shamil village. Ziarat, which takes its name from a shrine dedicated
to Saiyid Sulaiman, is surrounded by large date groves : the house of the
Kalantar is a conspicuous object. There are 200 houses and the population
may be 1,000 souls; the inhabitants are Shi’ahs of no particular tribe.
Bates and barley are the staple of cultivation. Sweet water for drinking
and for cultivation is obtained from the adjacent stream. Live stock
amounts to 50 cattle, 500 sheep and goats, and 50 donkeys, which latter
are the only transport animals.— (Lorimer, 1906.)
ZIARAT CHALGAN—
An old cemetery in Kirman 19 miles north of Bijnabad, close to a run
ning stream—some of the tombstones date back to the seventeenth
century.— (Sykes, 1894.)
ZIARAT-I-’ABBAS on ZEH KALUT— Lat. 27° 48' 20". Long. 58° 30' 25".
Elev. 1,287'.
The ninth stage on the road from Bampur to Khanu in Rudbar. It
lies to the north of the Milan-i-Jihun and is 21 miles from Kalaghan, the
eighth stage. Here are n umerous wells, which were constructed by Abdul
’AH Khan, ndzir to the Governor of Bam. These wells are 20 feet deep
and contain good sweet water ; some of them were out of repair when
visited (1885), owing to heavy rain. Grass, wood, and forage abundant,
but no habitations.— (Jennings.)
ZiARAT-I-IMAM QASIM—
A village on the Dasht Ab plain (q.v.) in the Kirman province.
ZlARAT-I-MALIK— Lat. 30° 25'. Long. 60° 41';
In Sis"an. Somewhat brackish Wa + er oozes up out of the bed of the
ndld. There is a zidrat. In the bed of the ndld near the water is a certain
amount of coarse grass. With this exception there is no camel srazino to
be had.— (Gibbon, 1908.) 8 °
ZlARAT-I-MlR MIKDAD—
An ancient cemetery in Kirman, 18 miles from Zeh Kalut, on the Bij-
nabad road. There is a tomb and mud shrine, dedicated to the
memory of Mir Mikdad, the standard-bearer of the Prophet’s army : and
^ cemetery, tombstones dating back some 250 yews.— (Brazier-Creagh,

A village in Kirman, 29 miles east-south-east of Bam, on the road
to Rigan.— (Sykes, 1898.)
ZlARAT-I-SHAH SALIM—
A shrine on the Khanu-Minab road between Chirkuh andKaleh-i-Duzdi,
the first and second stages on that route. It is on the banks of the Gudar

The item is Volume IV of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1910 edition).

The volume comprises that portion of Persia south and east of the Bandar Abbas-Kirman-Birjand to Gazik line, with the exception of Sistan, 'which is dealt with in the Military Report on Persian Sistan'. It also includes the islands of Qishm, Hormuz, Hanjam, Larak etc. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and the whole district of Shamil.

The gazetteer includes entries on villages, towns, administrative divisions, districts, provinces, tribes, halting-places, religious sects, mountains, hills, streams, rivers, springs, wells, dams, passes, islands and bays. The entries provide details of latitude, longitude, and elevation for some places, and information on history, communications, agriculture, produce, population, health, water supply, topography, climate, military intelligence, coastal features, ethnography, trade, economy, administration and political matters.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

The volume contains an index map, dated July 1909, on folio 323.

The volume also contains a glossary (folios 313-321).
