The proposal at present under discussion is that
a sum should he paid to the firm as compensation for
the loss suffered by them through the interruption
of their business in consequence of the cancellation
of their contract by the Sheikh of Sharga and Sir E.
Grey presumes that such compensation would amount to
a sum less than the firm might have hoped to make if
their contracts had been carried through in the most
favourable conditions and without the slightest hitch.
It is however on this assumption that the firm, in
the present communication, would appear to base their
claim and it is therefore, as it seems to Sir E. Grey,
necessary eventually to refer the question of the
amount of compensation actually due to some independent
tribunal possessing the business experience necessary
to fix it.
I am accordingly to state that, subject to any
observations which the Marquess of Orewe may wish to
offer
