(in 1844) inhabited, aboue Mohammerah, by
the Arab Tribe of Montefik belonging to
Turkey.)

(This rough sketch, prepared by Major Rawlinson,
was enclosed in Sir Stratford Canning’s despatch,
No. 70, of April 27, 1844. All these lines
only approximate: both the Persian and Turkish
claims were augmented subsequently ; moreover,
the point of convergence of the three lines should,
according to Major Rawlinson’s written des
cription, have been further north between
Kushk-i-Ujum and Kuskh-i-Bussorah.)
