In my despatch N o. 776-42 of
the 5th September 1910, I
spoke of this house as “old and

Gaskin, who knew it well,
informs me that it was
capable of standing for some
years more. Eram Bey, the
Wali’s Political Secretary, was
himself living in it when it
was condemned. It was the
first house of a British subject
to be destroyed, and unprepared
as I was then for unscrupul

local authorities, I did not take
the precaution of inspecting it
personally.
