a third of their present length.
Unfortunately it is impossible for Jedda to supply
more typed copies of their reports than they do at
present'"indeed Ryan says that in the hijefeht of the
hot weather it is very difficult to make their
reduplicating machine produce legible copies at all —
and they cannot therefore give effect to the proposal
in the final paragraph of your letter. But, as the
length of the reports is to be so much reduced, their
composition and printing will, we hope, be rendered
correspondingly easier and quicker and much of the delay
in distributing the printed copies should be avoided.
We hope that in this way the requirements of the Government
of India will be largely met and that the reports in their
new form may have an increased value for all concerned.
I notice by the way that in the first paragraph of
his letter of 2nd August Metcalfe says that the Government
of India have been in the habit of sending copies of the
reports to Bushire, Bahrein, Koweit and Muscat. But the
direct distribution from Jedda includes Bushire and '
Koweit, who should, therefore, get them reasonably quickly
already. As Bahrein and Muscat are presumably less
important

About this item

Content

This file documents changes to the distribution and general nature of situation reports produced by the British Consulate (later Legation) at Jedda. It features correspondents from the Foreign Office, the Colonial Office, the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , and the Government of India's Foreign and Political Department.

According to the file, copies of the reports were sent directly to Bushire, Muscat, Singapore, Koweit [Kuwait], and Bahrein [Bahrain] until April 1926, when it was arranged that five copies of each report would be sent to the Government of India via the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , before being distributed to the Government of India's Foreign and Political Department and to Bushire, Bahrain, Kuwait and Muscat respectively. Subsequent correspondence in the file discusses the following: requests from the Government of India for additional copies of the report, the Legation's and Foreign Office's reluctance to comply with these requests on the grounds of practicality and discretion, and a proposal made by His Majesty's Minister at Jedda (Sir Andrew Ryan) in 1932 to change the format of the report to that of a newsletter and to reduce its length by a third.

The file includes a divider which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence (folio 1).
