spinning and weaving Industry in Medina with the help of
i ' >d ' ian capital » 1 have the honour to transmit to you herewith
a translation of an advertisement that appeared in the
Saut-ttt-Hajaa on the 4th February last, announcing that
Madina made cloth was for sale in Mecca.
2 * 1 m sending under separate cover a sample of the
clotn which reveals a poorness of quality that even the
manufacturers were unable to deny. rhe price, fixed at
three quarters of a riy&l saudi, equivalent at present rates
per yard,
to one shilling and ffeP06 pence,/precludes lie tale on an
ordinary com ereial basis and limits its appeal to those
whose religious sentiment sees value In anything coming from
the holy cities.
3. The Manual caving Institute (or Par as onfi*)
as the enterprise in Medina is called was formally inaugur
ated in the preseme of Saudi officials on the 6th September
1933 with two looms and one hundred spinning wheels brought
from India. Fifty spinning wheels were made locally. A
few months later twelve more looms were imported, also from
India, with teal-: sufficient to construct flf$y looms and
two hundred spinning wheels locally* All articles were
granted customs exemption by the Saudi Arab Government. The
spinning la undertaken by natives in their homes after the
necessary instruction, a spinning wheel and cotton has been
