After compliments I inform you that in accordance with the adv'^e
of the British Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and in order to,remove
the dispute I have resolved to allow you the loading of oxide
which is ready on the seashore of this island Ahu Musa, which may
be about 2000 tons, if the German firm asks you to load them, when
their steamer, called the "Louise* arrives in the middle of March,
you are peiftnitted to load the said oxide* This notice, which is
stated above / it is only for the oxide lying in the island on the
seashdre, close to the flagstaff, which we erected there specially
and close to , the lighters and carts and the tubs which are there
at the side of the oxide, this exists of three heaps, one of which
is the big, it is powdered and ready for shipment, the othwr two
heaps are small, situated close to the big heap and they still re
quire Collection of papers folded in half and stitched together to form a gathering of folios. work for powdering and you are free to load the said oxide
if you give us a guarantee through the British Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. in the
Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , with the following conditions;
1) Your workmen must not cause troublemin the island*
2) On no account must they go to the mines or put their
hands on any part of the oxide with the exception of the
oxide mentioned above.
3) After the finish of the Louise - shipment all the workmen
must leave the island and return from where they came and
if you and your workmen conform yourselves to the abovemen
tioned conditions, we give you the guarantee that not the
slightest trouble or interference will happen to you and
you may rest assured on this point*

(Lieutenant-Colonel Percy Zachariah Cox); German Government officials at the Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Office) in Berlin, the German Chargé d’Affaires in Tehran (Hartmann Oswald Heinrich Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthofen).

The correspondence refers to a dispute over a concession for the mining and shipment of red oxide at Abū Mūsá, originally awarded to Arab merchants by Shaikh Sālim bin Sulṭān Āl Qāsimī One of the ruling families of the United Arab Emirates; also used to refer to a confederation of seafaring Arabs led by the Qāsimī tribe from Ras al Khaima. of Sharjah in 1898, and part of which was subsequently acquired by Wönckhaus and Company in 1906. The dispute was sparked by the Ruler of Sharjah, Shaikh Ṣaqr bin Khālid Āl Qāsimī’s cancellation of the concession in 1907, and subsequent claims by Wönckhaus and Company and the German Government, over financial losses arising from the cancellation of the concession.

Amongst the papers are copies of correspondence, agreements and other papers dating between 1892 and 1907, relating to the original contract to mine red oxide at Abū Mūsá. Many of these agreements are in Arabic, with most accompanied by English translations.

The majority of the file’s correspondence is in German.
