Muscat Treaty.
I think news of signing should he broadcasted and communique

should he issued to press to avoid garbled accounts being published
in Arab (? newspapers).
2. I do not think there isjany special feature in the new treaty
that we can emphasise but I suggest something on the following lines.
Begins. A new treaty was signed at Muscat on - of February
between His Majesty’s Government, represented by Sir Trenchard Fowle,
Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , and the Sultan of Muscat,
replacing the old treaty of friendship, 1891, and reaffirming close
ties v/hich have existed between His Majesty's Government and the
State of Muscat for nearly a century and a half. It will be
remembered that the Sultan recently paid official visits to India
and England. Ends.
3. To this the British Broadcasting Corporation and Press could
add a short account of Muscat State from materials which are in
possession of Government of India and India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. in connection
with the Sultan’s visits.
4. I will consult Sultan on arrival at Muscat as to whether
he approves of above communique and will telegraph.
