The iSjnericans took over unofficial charge of French
interests in Muscat irl January, 1942 (Ext. 164^/42 fls-SJ 60 - 0(11
Collection attached). Je do not appear to have made
any comment^ at the time, nor, strangely enough ( has there been
any suggestion that a U.S* Consul should visit Muscat to discharge
his unofficial duties.
jith regard to the "property in Muscat formally used as
French Consular premises" mentioned on page 4 of Ext. 5355/44-?
Miss Jones and I have searched diligently but have been unable
to find any recent information about this. The best v^e can do
is a minute by Sir Gilbert Laithwaite at PZ 4176/32 (flagged
on Collection 20/11 attached) on a letter from the Political
Resident stating that the French Consul at Bushire considered
that Muscat was within his jurisdiction.
Our only other information seems to be at P 9109/20
(flagged on bound volume attached) where it is stated that the
French Consul at Bombay was due at Muscat "to wind up affairs
of French Consulate and coal depot". Unfortunately the later
papers deal only with the coal depot.
