I am directed by the
Secretary of State for India to
invite reference to your letter
of the 30th December last
regarding the proposal of your
Directors to open a branch of
the Eastern Bank, Ltd,, at
Kerman shah in II. 7/. Persia.
Mr Secretary Montagu much
regrets the delay that has
occurred in replying to your
letter, but it was necessary to
consider the question very
carefully in its various aspects,
in consultation with the Secretary
of State for Foreign Affairs, and
His Majesty’s Minister at Tehran.
He is now in a position to inform
you that His Majesty’s Government^
while recognising that there may be
advantage in the introduction of
fresh banking enterprise into
Persia when normal conditions of
trade, etc., have been restored^
would not be disposed to welcome

It includes correspondence between the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. and the following: the Eastern Bank Limited; the Foreign Office; and the Civil Commissioner, Baghdad.

The file also includes a copy letter from the Consul, Imperial Consulate of Persia, Ordnance Works, Sheffield, to the Foreign Office, and a copy reply from the Foreign Office, July 1920, regarding the proposal of the Persian Consul to establish an Anglo-Persian Commercial and Trading Bank in Persia.
