General Remarks.— good and broad (this stage) and otters no difficulties, except
where noted, on this side of Raugird and for the last 1| miles ; gradients, easy.

Ascends the cultivated valley; soil,
stony.
Descending gently, crosses a stony un
cultivated plain growing a poor thorn
scrub ; to the southward the hills are 10 to 15 miles distant.
Road, broad; surface, hard ; it zigzags to avoid a ravine, 30' deep.
Descends into the ravine and runs along
its bed.
Ascends out of the ravine. No water
met with since leaving the Anetbeg valley.
Two serais surrounded by walls, all of
mud; a garden and a few fields of wheat
irrigated by a plentiful stream is the
only cultivation here. This is generally
made the stage by caravans, i.e., the usual stages are Ibrahimabad, 24 miles ; Raugird, 23 miles;
Saleon, 17 miles ; Klim, 18 miles.
Crosses a gently undulating plain, barren and stony, affording a poor grazing for camels.
All camels seen were of a poor size and physique. No numbers of them were met.
A disused kamit and ruined enclosure.
Barometer 26‘0" (3,980'); temperature,
83°. The hills to the north are 3 to 4
miles distant.
A hot wind blowing.
Crosses a dry watercourse 200' wide.
Beyond it is a kanat 15' deep, and an
abambar (underground cistern reached
by steps) of clear cool water.
Passes by gentle gradient (3° to 5°)
over the undulation bounding the plain to the east, and descends gently into a stony basin,
1 mile in diameter, bordered by cliffs presenting the appearance of almost vertical rolls of
clay in juxtaposition, of a variegated red and yellow colour; detached cones of brown and
yellow clays also occur. The bills to the west of the Ab-i-Khonsar here sink into the
plain ; beyond the river they are 20 to 30 miles distant.
The basin undulates; the road is stony,
but good and 40' wide.
Kanat of brackish water; skirts the
left bank of the Ab-i-Khonsar, a rapid
muddy stream, 50' to 100' wide, flowing
in a deep bed between steep banks of clay.

Report marked strictly confidential, prepared in the Intelligence Branch of the Quarter Master General’s Department in India, by the Assistant Quarter Master General, Major and Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel Mark Sever Bell, Royal Engineers. The volume was published by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, 1885.

  • part II, a detailed account of southwest Persia, compiled from Sever’s own observations and other available sources
  • part III, commercial considerations. A further section in this chapter on strategic observations, which is mentioned on the contents page and marked as secret, is not present in the volume
