The Hazara Levies—just under 200 strong—were distributed
in posts to the north-west of Seistan as far as Neh ; the Seistani
Levies—400 camelry and 400 horsemen—were, with the excep
tion of about 100 camelry in the Dehani Baghi vicinity, mostly
in Seistan ; and some two to three hundred Sarhaddi Levies
had been enrolled at Khwash, though as yet they had not been
called upon for duty.
At Khwash, where General Dyer had his headquarters for the Farhad;
time being, the troops were mainly occupied for the first half of ( See Map ^
June in improving the defences of their encampment. Jiand
Khan had surrendered five hundred camels and much of the
rest of the plunder he had taken in his raids on the British lines
of communication. But his attitude was not satisfactory and he
absolutely refused to sell any forage to General Dyer, whose
horses and mules had to be put on half rations. He was also
strongly suspected of having instigated the destruction by fire
of a quantity of forage which another man had collected, for
sale to the British, at Deh Bala, a village fifteen miles to the
east of Khwash. On the 14th June, General Dyer marched
thither with a force of two troops 28th Cavalry, the section
25th Mountain Battery, fifty of the 19th Punjabis, two machine
guns and a few levies, to investigate the matter and to punish
the offenders. On his way he learnt that Jiand Khan was at
Deh Bala with an armed following and, as the column advanced,
Jiand and his men were seen to have taken up a defensive
position between the British and the village. Seeing the
British strength, however, Jiand evidently thought better
of it, closed his men and came forward personally to meet
General Dyer.
