SYKES MISSION OPERATIONS
of their activities and those of the South Persia Rifles in this
direction, from the end of May till the end of August, are given
in the following brief summary. .
On the 28th May, Captain A. N. I. Lilly, commanding the
South Persia Rifles detachment at Abadeh, learning that a
band of Qashqai robbers had carried off some sheep and
donkeys, promptly took out forty-five South Persia Rifles
cavalry and surprised the robbers, numbering seventy to
eighty, at a point about ten miles away. The robbers retired
fighting into the hills till darkness enabled them to escape,
though with a loss of at least ten casualties. The South
Persia Rifles appear to have had no casualties and recovered
all the stolen property.
On the 1st June, a squadron of the Burma Mounted Infantry,
under Major V. P. B. Williams, on their way to Dehbid, came
into collision with a band of robbers belonging to a Khamseh
tribe and pursued them for some miles, inflicting casualties
without loss to themselves.
On the 10th June a few South Persia Rifles, escorting a
caravan on the Isfahan road north of Abadeh, beat off an
attack by a band of Qashqai robbers, suffering one casualty.
On the 12th June a donkey caravan, carrying wheat for
Shiraz and escorted by a few South Persia Rifles, was attacked
and captured by Qashqai robbers not far from Abadeh, two of
the South Persia Rifles being killed and two of the robbers
wounded. Captain Lilly at Abadeh, on hearing of the occur
rence, at once went in pursuit with sixty South Persia Rifles
cavalry. He caught up the robbers and after a running fight
forced them to abandon a number of laden donkeys and
inflicted several casualties on them. The South Persia Rifles,
who covered over fifty miles during the day, suffered no
casualties, though one of their horses was wounded and two
died of exhaustion.
On the 18th and 19th June part of the Burma Mounted
Infantry detachment at Dehbid were engaged in that vicinity
with a robber band who had looted a donkey caravan. The
action was most effective, nine of the robbers being killed or
wounded and eighteen captured, while part of the lost property
was recovered. This affair had an excellent effect in the
neighbourhood.
On the 4th July Major Williams moved out from Dehbid, in
a south-westerly direction, with a column composed of the
Burma Mounted Infantry squadron and 150 rifles and a
machine gun section of the 124th Baluchis, to deal with a band
