The only possible argument for these not being
so classified, might he that the climate at Meshad is
not generally considered so unhealthy as Sis tan or
the Gulf* I think this is very much a matter of
opinion. The winter in lies had is extremely severe
and, particularly for Indians, can hy no means he
considered healthy, actually I have found that there
is more sickness among the staff in general at Meshad
than at Sistan. The Persians themselves regard Meshad
as one ol ohe most unhealthy places in Persia, it
being a very large and filthy town, the inhabitants
constantly suffering from epedemics brought in by the
thousands of pilgrims. In addition the cost of fuel
has become very expensive indeed of recent years and
the general cost of living at Meshad is higher than
at 8 is tan or in the Gulf.
