importance and of course we have not to forget the chief
obstructionist on the Coast. Apparently he visited here
some time ago and stated that the Ruler should preserve his
rights and stick to his demands, even though the company
is an English one.
On the 8th the Ruler told me he had received an
invitation from the P. R. to attend the meeting of the Coastal
Sheikhs at Sharjah on the 28th and wanted an excuse for not
attending and thought it a good idea if he wrote saying that
he would be unable to be present owing to the negotiations.
The following dayhe told me that he had decided to accept
and was leaving here on the 16th.
Since beginning this page I have received the return
visit of the Ruler, his uncle Khalifa and all the members of
the family. They arrived at 8.30 p.m. and stayed till 10.
They were all in a very good mood and the visit passed off
exceptionally well, and despite the fact that they had been
feasting all day they did good justice to the fare I provided.
If I do not find any signs of improvement Ipropose to
leave here a day or so before Shakboot leaves for Sharjah,
and I will then have the opportunity of seeing the P.R.
Tomorrov; and the day after are also considered as Eid
days here and there will not be much opportunity for business
but I hope to be able to get some news of what was said
amongst the family after our rather tempestuous meeting of
yesterday.
It has been blowing a gale all the afternoon and it is
really bad at the moment, the air is full of dust and what
are supposed to be windows are absolutely useless.
