CYPHER TELECRMi (CTP) from viceroy dated ^Rnd
October, 1945
1836-S. IMPORTANT
Private. General Arthur Smith suggested to
me recently that a visit to India by the regent
of Iraq would be agood thing. ; e have been
considering an invitation to a small Iraqi mioSi n
partly to consolidate commerce relations and^
partly as appreciation of cordiality oi Iraqi
Government toward Indian hoops during ohe war.
I think myself that the visit by the Regent
(possibly accompanied by Nun Said) would be a
better idea. Auchinleck could put up a good
military programme and this could oe comoined
with visits to the Viceroy*s house and to tne
Governors of some of the Provinces. Ii you see
no odlection I will mention the matter in Council
and send invitations through Amtessador Baghdad.
¥isit would not repeat not be aiiected by tne
elections and would cause us no embarrassment
from that point of view.
