PERMANENT COMMITTEE ON OEOGRAPHICAL NAMES.
P.51910.
231.1.1. Royal Geographical Society,
Kensington Gore,
London, S.W. 7.
2nd November 1933.
The High Commissioner for India,
Public Department,
india House, Aldwych, V.C. 2.
Sir,
Bahrein - Bahrain .
I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter
P.51683/231.1.1 of yesterday with enclosures, which will be
laid before the Committee. But I must call your attention to
the fact that the pronunciation given by the Adviser to the ’ai*
in Bahrain, as in *Rain # and in no circumstances as in •aisle*,
will be to the P.C.G.N. a very potent argument in favour of
retaining the spelling BAHREIN, as according to the R.G.S.II
System *ai* represents the sound as in ’aisle* and *ei* the
sound as in * rein*•
I may also remark that the official Atlas of
Egypt spells the name of the OASIS south of ?IWA BAHREIN.
I am. Sir,
your obedient servant.
(Sgd.) J. H. REYNOLDS.
Secretary, P.C.G.N
