The Adviser to the Bahrain Government took
up the question sometime ago with the Royal Geographical
Society and in forwarding him the First General List of
Place names, which you have also sent me, they stated that
they had an open mind in the matter and would be prepared
to hear arguments in favour of either foim of spelling.
Owing to pressure of work, however, the Adviser lost sight
of the matter and did not proceed with it.
4. In my opinion the spelling "ain" is correct.
The dual in Arabic is rendered in English "ain" vide
Fietcher T s English-Arabic Grammar. Furthermore the
accentuation is . This makes the second syllable
"ra" and not "re” according to Hunterian spelling. The
Bahrain Government are adopting the spelling "ain" and in
the absence of any arguments to the contrary, it appears
to me that we should follow their lead.
The Britannica Encyclopaedia employs both
spellings in its index of place names.
