We have not been informed by our London Office as to the Sterling
amount tuey are required to remit to Portugal and Spain in payment of the above
merchandise, but we believe it will not be in excess of £ 700. unfortunately we
ai*© not able to assist you by giving the value of yearly pre-war imports of these
beverages from Portugal and Spain as we previously had no direct shipments from
tusse Countries. *11 similar goods wsre obtained by us from ;bfay Mackenzie ft Co.
Ltd., and were, we believe shipped to them from London, so it is not possible for
us to determine now nwea of the total cost was applicable to wines end brandy
made in Portugal and Spain.
As mentioned in our letter PA-422 of June 24 to the Politioal Agent,
approvt;! u*is already been obtained from suppliers* (Seager Evans it Co.Ltd.)
oankers and also from tue Bank of iingland, for payment of present supplies to
be :aade in Sterling from London funds, for transmittal to Portugal and Spain in
the seme currency, so we trust you will be able to get the Reserve Bank of India
to concur with ti^ese arrangements.
inasmuch as our London Office have cabled us for instructions, and
shipment of the mere laadise is necessarily being withheld meentiras, we shall
appreciate it if you will get a ruling from the Reserve Bank of India by airmail.
