willing that I should come to Oman; I will then take your letter
with me to the Passport Office in support of ny application*
I enclose herewith for your information, a copy of a letter
required by the Passport Office in 1921, for me to land in Socotra
to Shoot; this letter was giren me by the Goyernment of Jombay
within whose jurisdiction Socotra lies*
In conclusion I would be most grateful for your kind help
both in getting to Oman, and after ajy arrival there, especially
for any tips peculiar to the country that you may consider will
be useful to me, such as the possibility of obtaining ageyls (guides)
eook etc* in Muscat; or must the servants be brought from India and
of what'iaitfc should these be? The buying or hiring of camel trans -
port and their saddles and ropes, fantasses for carrying water; for
a period of say up to f our months* The possibility of getting a
riding pony or mule for myself.What form of money should be brought.
Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. or what -also approximate amount.
If impossible to go after the Thar, would it be possible to land
in the province of Dhofar, in order to visit the ruins there?
In case ay first visit proves a failure I would add that I would
not be very disappointed but would like to try again another year.

  • A request made in 1911 by the Danish Legation in London (on behalf of the Royal Danish Geographical Society) for the British Government to support a proposed Danish expedition to Oman and Hadhramaut in Yemen. The request was turned down by the Foreign Office (folios 4-8)
  • A request made in 1922 by Isidor Morse, a 'naturalised Englishman' born in the United States of America, to enter the Omani interior in order to hunt for the Arabian tahr (a type of goat). This request was turned down by the Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. in Muscat (folios 9-15).
