V»iXl you please refer to Mr, Bailey's
letter i»o#710/fealdo E Lailey/Lg, dated the £5th June
1947, on the subject of the jurisdiction exercised
by his hajesty's Government in the Trucial Shaikhdoms,
tjatar and Bahrain.
E. The jurisdiction of Jiis Majesty's Government
over British subjects and foreigners in the Trucial
Sheikhdoms is based on custom and usage, which was
confirmed in 1945 by letters from the various hulers
the Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. according their formal consent to
the exercise of such jurisdiction.

3. Similarly the jurisdiction of His Majesty's
Government in Qatar was recognised in 1935 by a formal
letter from the Ruler of Qatar recognising such
jurisdiction over British subjects and foreigners other
than Eoslem foreigners not being British Subjects.
4. The jurisdiction of ills Majesty's Government
over British subjects in Bahrain vbb recognised in a
Convention entered into in 1861 between His Majesty's
Government and the Ruler of Bahrain. Similar jurisdiction
over foreigners is exercised by virtue of a formal letter
from the Shaikh of Bahrain in 1909 requesting His
Majesty's Government to exercise jurisdiction over them.
