In continuation of this Residence letter No«354-18/77,
dated the 16th March, 1940, I have the honour to submit
for transmission to His Majesty*s principal Secretary of
State for Foreign Affairs, London, a report on the working
of the Order for the year ending the 31st December, 1940*
Annual report on the working of the Bahrain Order-in-
Council for the year 1940, as required by Article 77 of the
order.
1. Statements showing the number of civil suits and
criminal cases entertained by the
Agency
An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent.
Courts are attached/
2. The total number of petitions registered during the
year was 1186 out of which 1120 were fresh suits as against
861 suits for 1939, reapresenting an increase of 2g9 civil
suits in comparison with the previous year*
3. The number of criminal cases was 294 as compared with
339 in 1939, showing a decrease of 45. There was one Sessions
case for attempt to commit murder. The other cases were
mostly theft, hurt and breach of passport regulations.
4 . Twenty orders of deportation were pas ed during the year
under report against 21 Iranians, 4 Saudi Arabians, I Iraqi,
1, Muscati, 1 Omani, 1 Hadramauti, 2 British subjects and 1
British protected person.
5. The total number of British subjects registered (under
the Bahrain Amendment Order-in-Council, 1922) during the year
was 1904, as compared with 2068 in 1939.
