very long I h?.ve not kept h copy for this office.

count be glad to let the Convoonwealth Relations Office have
a copy should they desire one. The following is a precis
of Mr. Schoff a conclusions:*-
(i) The maximum demand for potable water for the town
and the Kuwait Oil Company at the peak of their
expansion is taken as 1,652,000 imperial gallons aar di»n
(ii) The standard of water quality proposed is 2,00G
p.p.m. total disolved solids, 900 p.p.ra. Chloride, 500
p# ?*^ bul P” ri ^ e f ^ Mamiesx uk, 1.5 p.p.m. Florid
ana 500 p.p.m. total hardness as CaC 03 . If distilled
TOter absolutely free of mineral matter were mixed with
the best water yet found by the Kuwait Oil ^Compcjiy the
proportions «juld have to do 1 to 1 to reduce the
oulphate to tine su^ estod limit.
(iii> If water up to this standard were found and drawn
upon at tho rat© proposed it would have to be regarded r
as an exhaustible resource to be used while it lasts
and then supplanted by another supply, as the rainfall,
reservoir replenishment, and safe yeild are too low to
maintain it indefinitely.
(iv® The hope of finding better water than that already
found is alight and rests mainly on the chance of their
being aoife unpredictable geological variation, such as a
decrease in the minerals available for solution. It is
considered that the south-eastern part of the state has
been adequately explored, but that further drilling
might be undertaker in the south-western portion, and
that so ie wells might be sunk in the northern parts -
largely to forestall tho criticism that "nothing has been
done" about that area.

About this item

Content

The file concerns proposals for the supply of drinking water to Kuwait (also referred to as Koweit). It was said in 1947 that the need for fresh water was one of Kuwait's most pressing requirements, and now that the state was in receipt of considerable royalties, Kuwaitis would not be satisfied until the need was met (folio 48).

In addition to India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. (later Commonwealth Relations Office) minutes and correspondence, the file includes correspondence from the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Kuwait (including emphasis on the need for a British, rather than an American company to undertake the work, folio 48); a proposal that the Associated Ethyl Company of London might be invited to combine their operations with the distillation of water for Kuwait; correspondence with the British Chemical Plant Manufacturers Association, London, and British firms interested in the project; and papers concerning a report on a municipal water supply for Kuwait by Mr Hogg of J.D. & D.M. Watson Limited, Consulting Engineers, for the Shaikh of Kuwait.

The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
