4. In the construction of this Order and of any Rules, Regu
lations or Orders made thereunder the following words and
expressions have the meaning hereby assigned to them, unless
there be something in the subject or context repugnant thereto,
that is to say: —
“ Administration ” means letters of administration, in-

(i) a British subject as aenneo—1__
Nationality and Status of Aliens Act, 1914^
in the case of persons born before the entry into
force of that Act, any person who is a British
subject under the Common Law and the Acts
repealed by that Act;
(ii) the subjects of the Sheikhs of Bahrein, Koweit
and the Trucial States A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. ; or
(hi) foreigners subject to this Order under Article 8
(1) (tf) (ii) thereof.
British ship ” means a merchant ship, being a British
ship within the meaning of the Merchant Shipping Act,
i894( a ), and, except where the context otherwise requires,
includes a ship belonging to any British subject as herein
defined.
“ British subject ’’ means and includes—
(1) any person who is a British subject as defined in
the British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act,
1914, or, in the case of persons born before the
entry into force of that Act, any person who is
a British subject under the Common Law and
the Acts repealed by that Act;
(2) British protected persons;
(3) any corporation incorporated under the law of any
part of His Majesty’s dominions, protectorates,
f( protected states or mandated territories.
Chief Court ” means a Court held by the Political
Resident as hereinafter defined.
. The Court means a Court held by the Political
Resident, the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , or the Judicial Assistant to
the. Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. .
“ District Court ” means a Court held by the Political
Agent or by the Judicial Assistant.
Foreigner means any person (including a corpora
tion) not a British or Qatar subject.

India and, until the coming into force of Part II of the

lations or Orders made thereunder the following words and

in Qatar but does not include—

force of that Act, any person who is a British
subject under the Common Law and the Acts
repealed by that Act;
(ii) the subjects of the Sheikhs of Bahrein, Koweit
and the Trucial States A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. ; or
(hi) foreigners subject to this Order under Article 8
(1) (#) (ii) thereof.
