in any other activities without the previous
consent of the Government of Bahrain*
(5) Mr. Belgrave shall, if so required, perform the
duties of the Officer Commanding, Bahrain Armed
Police, in addition to his own in the latter f s
absence from the State.
As regards (1) Mr. Belgrave has represented, and
the Deputy Ruler of Bahrain, the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Bahrain,
and I agree that four years is too long a period for an
European to service continuously in the enervating climate
of Bahrain without a change to Europe. I consider that
the proposed modification, which does not alter the total
amount of furlough admissible under the original contract,
will be of ultimate benefit to the State. /
(2) has been conceded on the representation of
Mr. Belgrave' that the time spent on travelling during the
hottest part of the year to and from the nearest hill
station destroys the benefit derived from the stay of the
few remaining days of the month of annual leave that can
be spent there. With the slowness of travel by the slow
mail, the only mail calling at Bahrain, this is true.
(3) gives a concession which involves no additional
expenditure to the State.
Opportunity has been taken, to insert (4), which was
apparently inadvertently omitted previously, and (5).
As the previous agreement was made with the approval
of the Government of India I forward the alteration proposed
for their approval and I trust that there will be no
objection to my signifying my approval of the proposed
agreement with the principle of which I am inpery strong
accord both in respect of the advantage to Mr'. Belgrave
and to the State. I have, etc.,
