Ihe area m question comprises 60,000 acres of land now unde:
water in the flooded area of the Euphrates s hounded:
On the North by the Channel of the Old Euphrates between a
point feorth of Suk-ss-Shuyukh and the date groves of Medina
and Q.urnah, and then by the date groves and cult! vated land
south of the Shatt-el-Arab;
On the East by a limit of a cultivation west of Gurmat Ali:
On the South by the Desert between the Wadi A seasonal or intermittent watercourse, or the valley in which it flows. of Zobeir and
Khani s i a:
And on the West by the limit of cultivation between Suk-es-
Shuyukh and Ehamisia:
It is proposed to enclose this area by a dyke;pump out the
water and reclaim and cultivate the dried area by means of
pumping and dredging plant.
Application is also made for an option on a further 60,000
acres of land lying in the dry area south of the date groves
of JBawa and north of the alignment of the proposed Fas Canal.
The intention is to cultivate this area, with the aid of
water pumped from the Euphrates overflow, or/from the tails of
on^ or many of the Shatt-al-Arab creeks, dredged and deepened
to the satisfaction of the authorities.

The part contains correspondence discussing the visit to Mesopotamia of Mr E Gedge, representative of both the East Africa Lands and Development Company and Fanti Consolidated Mines Limited, and his investigation of the area's agricultural conditions, with a view to applying for a grant of concession for land development.

Correspondents include the aforementioned Mr Gedge, the Acting Civil Commissioner in Baghdad (Lieutenant-Colonel Arnold Talbot Wilson), the Secretary of State for India (Edwin Samuel Montagu), and officials of the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. and the Foreign Office.

Also included is a sketch map of the area for which Mr Gedge requests a grant of concession.
