No. 1.
Sir Edward Grey to Sir G. Lowther.
(No. 114.)
Sir,
Foreign Office, March 25 1912.
I TRANSMIT to your Excellency herewith copy of a letter from the Board of Trade,*
containing observations on your despatch No. 103 of the 3rd February, copy of which
J caused to be forwarded to that department, relative to the effect on British
commercial interests of a suggested modification of the trace of the Bagdad Railway.
It has been suggested in this connection that an opportunity might occur of
obtaining from the Bagdad Railway Company the transfer to a British company of the
branch of the line from Sadije to Khanikin in return for some concession to Germany
elsewhere, and I should be glad to receive your Excellency’s views as to whether,
in such circumstances, the Turkish Government would be likely to raise objections to
the transaction.
I am, &c.
E. GREY.
