Letter frow the Hon’ble the Political Resided in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ,
No. 1095, dated the IOth June 1928.
In Continuation of my report No. 66, dated the 12th January 1928 [Serial No.
(24)] on the subject of slavery in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , I have the honour to forward,
herewith, a memorandum showing cases of slavery w'hich we have traced in this
Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. during the last eighteen months.
The first point of interest is that all the slave trade which exists other than
such as may emanate from Nejd is from Persian Baluchistan to the Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. ,
the Batineh Coast of Muscat territory being frequently used as a pied d terre.
The only cases connected with Indians are Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5 ; and it will be
seen that very few cases reported are not recovered by us.
The Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. Agent at Shargah has been responsible for this satisfactory
result, and I shall duly recommend him for recognition for his excellent work.
He informs me that he has never seen or heard of Indian slaves, employed in
pearling boats.
This view is confirmed by the Political Agents of Bahrain and Kuwait, neither
of whom have been able to trace a case of the kind and who have never heard of
an Indian slave.
The pearl diving and purchasing business is largely financed by Hindu mer
chants, who are in constant touch with the boats and as will be seen from the memo
randum take immediate action if they suspect any case of an Indian slave.
In the circumstances I have little doubt that very few cases of the kind occur
and such as do are the result of Baluchis from Persian Baluchistan kidnapping
children or boys of dark colour from the Karachi district.
