With reference to recent questions in the
House of Commons regarding slave dealing in the Persian
Gulf, I am directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to
state that his attention has been drawn to a newspaper
report of a trial held at Karachi on the 10th October last.
According to this report, the Assistant Public Prosecutor
for Sind, who appeared on behalf of the Crown, stated
"that the traffic in slaves had become very common and
"several Makranis were plying a lucrative trade".
2. I am to request that, if the Sari of Birkenhead
sees no objection, a statement may be procured of the facts
on which the prosecuting Counsel based this statement, and
that the Government of India may also be requested by
telegram to instruct the
Political Resident
A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency.

Gulf to draw up as soon as possible a report on the present
position of the slave trade in the Gulf, showing whether
there is any reason to believe that there has of late been
an increase in the traffic.*
