ittfIC jIE 1, (a) The area to- which this .p'rocnent applies is the
Etato of Er'i-al-Qaiwaiii, ^jrabia, including all Islaius and Territorial
;;aters appertaining thereto, (hereinafter referred to as "THE o'EEE")
"being all that Territory included in the Shaikhdon of Um-a 1-Qaiwain.
The Shaikh agrees that when the Territorial limits of the State
of Un: -nl-Qaiwain have been deter lined, the area covered by the
Conccssi 'n will be coterninous with the lirdts so ueternined,
(b) Nothing in this agreement shall be read as restricting -
in any way - the right of the Shaikh to grant to others a lease or
permit over an area or areas to be used f r the purpose of
constructing an aerodrome and appurtenances thereto for either
aeroplanes or seaplanes; and such area, or areas if and so granted
shall be entirely excluded far the purpose of this agreement,
EtTICLE 2, The porxod of this ^igreenont shall be 75 Calendar
years from the date of signature.
The expression year, month and Cay -used in this ixgreooent shall
mean what is consistent V/ith the English Solar Calendar and not any
other, further, the weights mentioned Ln tills agreement shall be
reckoned on the English T .>n of 2,240 lbs.
AiiTICLE 3* The Shaildi hereby grants to the Corxpany the
exclusive right, to explore search for drill for produce and wan
natural gas asphalt ozokerite crude petroleum and thmir products and
cognate substances (hereinafter referred to as "THE JlBEEJ'iCEE")
within the State, the exclusive ownership of all the Substances so
produced and won, the right to refine transport sell for use within
and without the State or for expert and t j export or otherwise deal
with or dispose of the Substances, and the right to import export pump
ship or otherwise transport the Substances acres, or to any country
or place at the Company ’ a discretion and the right t . do all tilings
necessary for the purpose of these operations,
jETICIE 4. If hereafter any neutral E-.no is created adjacent
to the territory of the dtato, wherein the Shaikh shall have a co
equal and joint interest, the Shaikh hereby agrees to grant to the

agreed between the Shaikh, the Company and the joint ruler of such
Neutral Zone.

The file concerns the signing of an oil concession agreement between Shaikh Ahmad Bin Rashid [Aḥmad bin Rāshid Āl Mu‘allā], Ruler of Umm-al-Qaiwain (also referred to as Umm-Al-Quwain) and Petroleum Concessions Limited.

The papers include copies of the agreement (signed on 20 March 1945); copies (and draft) of the political agreement (signed on 29 January 1946) between HM Government and Petroleum Concessions Limited, relating to the Umm-al-Qaiwain oil concession; correspondence between the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , other British Government officials, Petroleum Concessions Limited, and its subsidiary Petroleum Development ( Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. ) Limited concerning the agreements; and the Ruler's agreement not to enter into negotiations with a bank for permission to open a branch or agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. in his country unless he had first obtained the approval of the British Government.

The copy of the oil concession agreement between the Ruler of Umm-al-Qaiwain and Petroleum Concessions Limited on folios 66-83 is in both English and Arabic.
