respectively.
Chiru is a village on the mainland, opposite Hinda-
rabi Island. The anchorage is reported to be good and
sheltered, except from the south-east. There is a fair
supply of water. In conjunction with Hindarabi Island,
the place might be converted into a small naval station.
Fao, on the right bank of the Shat-el-Arab, is in
Turkish territory, but may be mentioned here as being
the cable station at the head of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
(see p. 64). The village contains about 400 inhabitants,
and the stone fort is garrisoned by a detachment of
Turkish troops, but has no modern defences. The
landing-place is a rough stone jetty.
I,i)i(/ah, the port of Laristan, was once an important
commercial distributing centre, but its trade is now
rapidly declining. Pearl fishing is the principal local
industry. The value of the imports in 1003 showed
a decrease on that of 1902, chiefly owing to the fact
that many pearls were shipped direct to India from the
Arabian coast in preference to sending them via Lingah.
Population about 12,000, chiefly Arabs. The harbour has
a breakwater, and is sheltered from all but the south-west
winds. Anchorage in 5 fathoms 6 cables off shore. The
water supply is good, and provisions are procurable.
Mughu is a small fishing village on the bay of the
same name. The anchorage is good, and sheltered from
the north-westerly and south-easterly gales. A coast
road connects the village with Lingah. There are no
built landing-places.
Mohammerais on the north bank of the Hafar Channel,
which connects the’ Karuu with the Shat-el-Arab (see
p. 1.7). Population about G,000. The Arab Sheikh of
Mohammera, though nominally a Persian subject, is
virtually independent. His territory stretches along the
coast from the Shat-el-Arab eastwards to within a few
miles of Dilani. On the north-east it marches with that
of the Bakhtiaris from Band-i-Kir to Ram Hormuz, and
on the east with that of the Kuhgehlu tribe. He
exercises control over the once-powerful tribe of Kab
