VISIT TO TEHRAN
The following summary of events in connection
with my recent visit to Tehran is communicated for the
information of Their Lordships.
2. I received a cable from H.B.M. Minister at
Tehran on 15th December, 1934, asking me to visit Tehran.
I therefore asked Air Officer Commanding, British Forces
in Iraq, if he could supply air transport. He regretted
that he could only fly me between Basra and Baghdad.
3. I thereupon informed our Minister at Tehran
that I should be unable to visit him, but he replied
that Sir John Cabman would supply an Anglo-Persian Oil
Company machine to fly me.
4. I accordingly left Basra for Baghdad on Monday,
7th January, 1935, in a Victoria accompanied by my
Secretary and Staff Officer (Operations).
I was met at Baghdad by the Air Officer
Commanding, British Forces in Iraq, Air Vice Marshal
William G.S.Mitchell, C.B.E., D.8.O., M.C., A.F.C., with
whom I had a short informal discussion and then proceeded
to the British Embassy.
5. On arrival at the Embassy I was informed by
Sir Francis Humphrys that the flight to Tehran over
mountains 12,000 feet high was quite out of the question
owing to snow, he was most strongly supported in this
view by the Air Officer Commanding.
Moreover Sir John Cabman on his return trip
from Tehran had had to make a forced landing and by all
accounts had a miraculous escape.
6. Sir John Cabman, who was staying at the
Embassy, offered me two cars with experienced drivers
to take me to Tehran and back and to arrange for my
accommodation en route.
7. In view of the fact that an audience with
H.I,M. The Shah had already been arranged I decided to
undertake the Journey.
8. I left Baghdad in an Anglo-persian Oil
Company ’Dragon Moth* on Monday afternoon (7th January)
and flew to Khanaquin where I spent the night with the
Anglo-Persian Oil Company Manager.
