Tamb was Persian. First, we were assured by its
previous history that the Persian claim was invalid,
and secondly we had our treaty rights to the Sheilch
ot Has-ul—Khaimah and were hound to support his position.
1 said that this and Bahrain were just instances of the
Dickering and pin-pricks of which I had spoken earlier.
The Persian claim to Bahrain seemed to me to be quite
worthless and I felt that the Persian Government were
really merely making use of it to worry us. It was just
this sort of thing which I hoped to see dropped if the
atmosphere was to be improved. We on our side also had
points which irritated the Persian Government. I skated
rather gently over Hen jam and Baaidu without mentioning
them, saying that w© had enjoyed Persian hospitality for
a very long time in certain parts of the Gulf, and were
very grateful for it, but that of course there were certain
points on our side too which in time must be put ri^tit.
Ala took my remarks on these points very well.
6 . He also mentioned the bastion of the Indian
Consuls, aa to which I merely repeated what had been said
to him in the Foreign Office, namely that to raise this
question as they had done would only do harm. There was,
! I aaid, a large body of opinion in official circles here
connected with Persia who were not at present willing to
accept the Persian views regarding modern developments.
The action of the Persian Government in the question of
the Indian Consuls merely defeated its own object.
7. I expressed ay great admiration of the hah in
all respects, and said that I much hoped that it would
be iaade possible for me from time to time to see Hie
Majesty,/
