where it had been agreed on a previous occasion that there was
nothing to prevent trie Persians landing any number of troops
in the island - v/hich they had every right to do — with which
to resist our landings. in these circumstances if we wished
to continue using Basidu and Henjam the Persians could easily
pr ounce a situation where we should have to take the initiative
in using force to establish our occupation.
LOkjj J.1AIL3KAM pointed out that if the Persians inter—
r o-red v/ith the flag or the caretaker at Basidu* this would
constitute an aggression, however little physical force was
necessary. He then proceeded to develop his argument in
iavour oi ootaining a legal opinion. He wished to have all
possible information regarding our case. He felt that it was
moso imporuant ) if Bahrein was the essential key position which
it was represented to be* that we should know whether there
was any weak spot in our case, and in fact the Law Officers
might be asked whether they could suggest any appropriate
measures to strengthen our position, if they thought it
vulnerable* It might well be found that we had a prescrip
tive right to our tenure at Bahrein.
TH2 CHAIRMAN said that it was generally accepted that a
lirni line should be taken in future dealings with the Persians,
and that on no account could we give up Bahrein.

SIR SAMUEL HOARE said that while he still thought that
