C opy of a letter from Mr. R. A. Grieve, C.B.E.,
Treasury, to the Secretary of the Sub-Committee,
TREASURY CHAMBERS,
WHITEHALL, S.W.l.
8th May, 1934.
My dear Hind,
Although I was unable to he present at the
recent meeting of the Middle East Official Committee I
have read the papers in oonnection therewith with con
siderable interest. The immediate political reactions
concern other Departments more than they do the Treasury
though, for my own part, I am inclined to agree with
Hoare that it would be better to let the Shah get over
his temper before approaching him again. It seems to
me at least possible that we may owe these constant pin
pricks and teacup storms in the
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
to the
inspiration which the Persians derive from an Italian-
officered "Persian Navy".
In any case I should like to place it on record
that the Treasury generally supports the view expressed
by the
India Office

and in particular as regards Bahrein.
It seems to me to be a major British interest that we
should, at all times, retain a Naval station in the
Persian Gulf

. Our title to Bahrein has been good enough
in the eyes of the world for a considerable time.
