108. British Interests. —Reference para
graph 102. The trial of Roberts’ assailants
is being held up pending settlement of the
composition of the tribunal by which they
are to be tried. The Governor, the Karguzar
and the Officer Commanding Troops as well
have referred to higher authority for orders.
Meanwhile, the Karguzar has been in
formed that Tumans 600 is considered by
the Consulate-General as fitting compen
sation for Roberts.
109. Import duties on tea and sugar.—'The
news of the recently sanctioned import
duties on tea and sugar gave rise to a good
deal of excitement in Bushire. The mer
chants have wired to Tehran protesting
vigorously against the imposition, and
threaten to close the bazaar and take bast
in the Telegraph Office. It is expected that
many dealers and merchants will be rendered
bankrupt; also that a good deal of smuggling
will take place.
110. Electric Lighting Plant. —Reference
paragraph 103. Hr. Neinhaus (paragraph
87) has volunteered to hire the electric
plant from the Municipality for three years
at a rental of Rs. 450 per mensem, provided
the Governor will undertake the collection
of charges for the supply of energy. The
offer does not commend itself to the
Governor.
Bandar Abbas.
111. Local Officials.—The personnel of
the principal Government Departments,
including the Governorate, Kargusarate and
Post Office, have not received their salaries
since the commencement of the current
Persian year (March 31st).
112. Meteorological .—On the 16th, at
9-45 a.m., a fairly severe earthquake shock
lasting several seconds was felt at Bandar
Abbas. There have been three or four
slight shocks since.
Mekran.
113. Postal. —Mirza Ali Akbar, from
Bandar Abbas post office, has been appoin
ted postmaster, Jask.
114. Charbar. —Under orders from Din
Mohamed of Dashtyari, who says that h^ is
carrying out the instructions of Dost
Mohamed Khan of Bampur, Sher Mohamed,
wali of Charbar, is imposing a tax of 3% on
all goods coming into the port from the
interior. Trade is at a standstill and goods
are lying in the bazaar as they are not
allowed to be warehoused until the duty
is paid.
The Chief is also levying a tax of 4 annas
per camel of the Indo-European 'Telegraph
Department line establishment coming into
Charbar for rations.
115. Arms Traffic.—k Baluchi is report
ed to have landed 15 magazine rifles at
Bunji on the 19th.
116. Slave Traffic.—One Mohamed Hasan
of Birka is reported to have shipped one
male and one female slave from Gohisar
in an an Arab craft.
