Opium.
Messrs. Clotworthy and Harris, English
chemists, who were brought out to Shiraz
by Haji Muhammad Husain Nemazi to
test his purchases of opium, left Bushire
for Basrah on the 3rd on their way back
to England by the overland route.

All the vessels belong to the British
India Steam Navigation Company, and
the consignments are for transhipment
at Bombay.
Meteorological.
Thirteen inches of rain fell in Bushire
during the month.
The rainfall for the month in Bandar
Abbas was between 10 and 12 inches,
which constitutes a record for the past
five years.
A slight earthquake shock was felt in
Bandar Abbas between 2 a.m. and 3
a.h. on the 12th.

Shaikh of Muhammerah.
The Prime Minister and the Shaikh of
Muhammerah met at Ahwaz on the 7th.
At an interview the same afternoon,
Sir P. Loraine explained to Reza Khan
the position of His Majesty’s Govern-
ment.
On the 8th a second interview took
place between Reza Khan and the Shaikh
with satisfactory results. The Premier
and the Shaikh swore friendship on the
Koran. Persian troops will remain at
Shustar till the spring ; if by then the
pacification of the Lurs (which the Prime
Minister contemplates) is complete, the
main body will withdraw, leaving only
detachments. As a temporary measure,
the Prime Minister is appointing a Mill’
tary Governor at Ahwaz, but this GovS
norship will be restored to the Shaikh m
the spring.
The Prime Minister assured Sir P.
Loraine that after the conclusion of the
temporary measures described above, the
Shaikh’s jurisdiction will remain sub
stantially unchanged. Persian officials
in the district have been given strict
orders to work in harmony with the
Shaikh and afford him any help he may
require. The Military Governor is not to
interfere wdth the Shaikh’s authority over
Arab the tribes.
One thousand Persian troops reached
Dizful through Luristan about the 1st.
One hundred and forty infantry, with
two machine guns and 40 cavalry, from
Ram Hormuz, reached Ahwaz on the
17th.
Eifty-three infantry, with two cases of
ammunition, left Ahwaz for Muhammerah
on the 20th.
Sartip Eazlullah Khan has been in
stalled as Governor-General of Khuzistan,
pro tem., with his headquarters at Ahwaz.
Mirza Ahmad Khan has been appointed
Deputy Governor of Khuzistan.
Yawar Husain Humayun has been
appointed Deputy Governor of Ahwaz,
Yewar Qasim Khan and Lieutenant
Nasrullah Khan, Deputy Governors of
Muhammerah and Ahwaz, respectively.
The head of the Adliyeh Department
at Shustar has been instructed by the «
Ministry of Justice to make Ahwaz his
headquarters and to organise Adliyehs in
all the towns of Khuzistan.

At the request of His Britannic
Majesty’s Consul for Arabistan, written
guarantees in respect of the Arabistan
properties of the Bakhtiari Khans have
been given by the Prime Minister to
Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Zaffar, Murteza Quli Khan and
Shahab-us-Sultaneh.
