^Summary of news received by His Majesty’s Political Resi
dency in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. for the month of August 1924.
PERSIA.
Movements.
Officers. —Dr. G. A. Richardson, O.B.E.^
His Majesty’s Consul, Bandar Abbas, left
for Karachi, on recess, on the 7th.
Mr. R. G. Monypenny arrived in Bushire
on the 13th and left on the 14th to relieve
Mr. A. S. Calvert as Consul, Shiraz. Mr.
Calvert reached Bushire on the 19th en
route for Europe.
Persian Officials —A new Deputy Gover
nor for Dashti and Dashtistan, Sultan Mirza
Ali Khan, arrived at Borazjan on the 24th.
Health, South Persia Ports.
No cases of infectious disease occurred
during the month.
Military.
The aeroplane landed from S. S. “ Nieden-
fels ” on the 19th June, was flown on the
loth August by M. Berhault from Bushire
to Shiraz, where it arrived -Ihe same day.
American Interests.
The remains of Major Imbrie, the late
American Consul at Tehran, were disem
barked at Bushire on the afternoon of the
24th from the mail steamer “ Vita ”, and
were embarked the next day with due cere-
mony on board the United States Scout
Cruiser “ Trenton ”. H. M. S. “ Crocus ”
assisted at the embarkation ceremony.
German Activities.
Frau von Mathusius’ party were held up
at Bushire throughout the month, owing to
the non-arrival of their friend, Herr Max
Kirsch, who was to drive the Mercedes car
up the road.
The Frau, who was a Socialist before the
War, now calls herself a Nationalist. She
is a journalist whose nom de plume is
“ Annamarie ”.
Anti-British Propaganda.
Copies of the News-pamphlet or Review,
named “ Namah-i-Farangistan ” and pub-
lishcd in Berlin are reachin j Bushire. No. 3
contains a photograph of a vessel named
" Puhlavi ”, which is Said to have been
purchased by the Persian Government in
Brei icn, and which was to have reached the
MC619-F.D.
Caspian Sea through Russia, but for diffi
culties created by the Soviet Government.
Copies of the first three numbers have been
sent to the Government of India.
Opium.
The Director of Customs, Bushire, ha$
received telegraphic orders from Tehran tb
the effect that the Persian Government has
forbidden the export or transhipment of
Foreign opium actually in Persia, and the
import of opium into Persia without the
previous authority of the Minister of
Finance.
Government Lands in the Gulf
Ports.
The Karguzar of the Gulf Ports has for
warded to His Majesty's Consul-General
copies of a printed notice, published by him
under instructions from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and dated 7th Asad 1303
(29th July 1924), stating that in accordance
with Government documents and the edict
of Mnzaffar-ud-Din Shah, dated Zilhejjih
1320 (1902), the Government is still the
owner of State lands and properties situated
in the Gulf Ports and that documents relat
ing to their disposal by transfer or monopoly
are invalid.
Mohammerah.
Raid on Iraq Tribe. —On the IGth July,
a party of the Hawaizah tribe of Persian
Arabistan raided the encampment of a party
of the Bait Hamadan (Khorjah) tribe of
Iraq near Micheri, about 15 miles south
east of Ha 1 fayah, within the Iraq Frontier.
His Excellency the Shaikh of Mohammerah
had no knowledge of the episode, but on
receipt of a complaint from the Government
of Iraq, is taking steps for the settlement of
the matter.
Shaikh of Mohammerah.—Hh Excellency
proceeded on a tour on the 10th to Benitumi
and Fallahiya in order to persuade his
tribesmen to sink their differences and rally
round himself. He returned successful
about the 20th.
The end of the month saw an improve
ment in the situation, consequent upon an
exchange of telegrams between the Shaikh
and the Prime Minister, in which the latter
assured the former that it was not the inten
tion of the Persian Government to deprive
