Finance Department .—Colonel D. ^ •
MacCormack, American Financial Adviser,
who arrived from Tehran on the 27th, has
succeeded in arriving at a settlement c
various difficulties which had arisen between
the Finance Department and the landowners
and merchants, over the new opium
regulations. The settlement, he calculates,
will bring in additional annual revenue
of from 60,000 to 70,000 Tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. .
Military.—125 infantry and 25 cavilry
with various road-making implements,
arrived from Isfahan on the 12th and leit
for Bushire on the 15th. r lhis is doubtless
the party which reached Bushire on the
25th, vide infra.
Bushire-Shiraz Road,—Except at Deh
Shaikh and Mian Kutal, all road making
parties appear to have been withdrawn,
possibly on account of the funds allotted
having come to an end. Tte surface of the
track is now reported to be clear of stones,
though bumpy in parts ; it looks doubtfully
safe for heavy vehicles.
Mr. Chick, on his way to Bushire, report
ed a resuscitation of exactions by Khans of
the stages of the Koad south of Mian Kutal.
The Rais-i-Amnieh, Yawar Malikzadeh, is
unable to put a stop to them owing to the
wanton interference in his sphere by the
military authorities in Bushire.
Travellers .—(See also under Bushire.)
Herr. lY assmus s, German Consul at
Bushire in 1913-14, arrived in Shiraz from
Isfahan on 2nd April. He announces
that he is no longer in the service of tl e
German Government, (although he Las
worked in the Foreign Office at Berlin
during the last three years !), and that he
is examining the prospects of an agricul
tural life for himself and other Germans
in South Persia. He certainly visited the
German Agriculturist, Herr Renner, at
Guyum.
Local Officials .—Haji Sa’ed-us-SuItaneh
arrived in Bushire on the 28th April. A
Bazar rumour had it that he was the Gov
ernor elect of the Gulf Ports. He has in
formed me personally that he has only come
to negotiate with Aqa Khan about the lease
of Lirawi.
Military .—25 four-wheeled carts arrived
from Shiraz on the 25th under a military
escort including forty “ cossacks ” on cycles.
It is stated that the purpose of this convoy
is to transport Persian military stores to
Isfahan.
On the night of the 14th April, some
machine guns and a quantity of ammuni
tion wore sent to Shiraz on camels.
Aviation .—Squadron Leader A. S. C. S.
Maclaren, O.B.E., M.C., D.F.C., A.F.C., on
his world flight, arrived at Bushire on the
23rd, and left the same clay for Bandar
Abbas in his amphibian Vickers-Vulture
machine.
Lieutenant Pellitier d’Oisy, of the French
Army, on his flight to Pekin, arrived on the
27th and left the next day, in his Breguet
military biplane fitted with a 350 H. P.
engine.
Captains Peas and deBeires, of the Poitu-
guese Army, on their way to Macao, landed
here on "the 28th April. They were
detained by the local authorities on the
ground that their landing was unauthorized
and illegal. (On receipt of orders from tl e
Capital, they were permitted to resume their
flight on the 2nd May). Their machine was
a Patria fitted with a 350 H. P. Renault
motor .
American activities .—The Vice Consul for
the United States of America says that he
knows of no reason for his presence in
Bushire except to assist the American
Financial Advisers in Tehran commercially.
An American citizen, Mr. Woodw ard, has
recently arrived here ; it is suspected that his
object is opium.
A telegram was received from Professor
Ernst Herzfeld at Shahpur reporting unex
pected discoveries of inscriptions, bas-re
liefs and buildings at Firuzabad, Farrash-
band and Sar Mashhad.
Bit shire.
Movements. —Lt-Col. A. P. Trevor left
Bushire on 11th April for Baghdad, where

now, Agent for the Hansa Line, arrived here
from Germany on the 2nd.

Seven Germans, including two women
arrived from Germany on the 9th. It was
stated that they were proceeding to Shiraz
as agriculturists in the employ of Nazim-
ul-Mulk, but they have not yet left Bushire,
apparently owing to lack of funds.
S. S. “ Hohenfels,” of the Hansa Line,
arrived at Bushire on the 13th. She dis
charged fourteen lorries with trailers and
several cases of machinery for the Persian
