Movements .—The Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. proceeded on tour to Bandar Abbas,
Hen jam, Bassidu and Lingah on the 24th February and returned on the
29th.
Kerman.
A circular has been received from Tehran instructing officials not to
dismiss subordinate officials without the permission of the Ministry concern
ed.
The elections at Jiruft are producing the usual complaints.
Dr. Moosa Khan, a doctor with French qualifications and English
practice during the war, who was in charge of the Nuri hospital, a “Wakf”
institution^ has resigned, as he has been unable to obtain either his pay or
medicines from^.the Mutawali in charge of the funds. The hospital was
doing good work and its closing will be a great loss to Kerman..
Local Officials .—The Governor General is leaving shortly for Tehran
to take up his place in the Medjliss. He will not attempt to be there for the
opening ceremony.
Local Government .—The Governor General is attempting to found a
municipality for cleaning and lighting the town. Tumans 300 per mensem
from the “ Nawaquil ” taxes will be paid by the Malieh for the purpose.
Military —The Officer Commanding is returning to Jiruft, where he will
take action to reduce Mir Barkat to terms. He said that the importance of
Zarqham-ur-Sultaneh and Said Khan was broken. It may be noted that
both of these two Baluch chiefs are in the hills and not arrested.
Russiar Consulate .—The Russian Consulate continues active. Printed
coloured notices have been put up in the bazaar giving names of firms, etc.,
desirous of dealing in goods with Persia, including German goods. Intend
ing purchasers are instructed to indent on Tabriz, Tehran, Resht, Meshed
and Bushire. A trade agent Eas to be appointed and men have been asked
to accept the post.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs has issued a notice saying that all
disputes with Russian firms or Russians wilj be tried in the ordinary Persian
Courts. Locally this is regarded as considerably lowering the prestige of
the Russians
Miscellaneous .—A very defined earthquake, lasting only for a few
seconds occurred on the evening of the 19th January. This was the result
of a severe shock in the Lalehzar-Kala Ashgar district, the centre of the bad
earthquakes in September.
The heavy and continued rains which have fallen since the beginning of
January promise an excellent crop and prices are falling.
