PERSIA.
Moltammerah. (1st—22nd January.) Shaikh Abdul Hamid Khan, the
Kaistuzar and Mima iiabibullah Khan proceeded to Ahwaz on the 14th
January to confer with His Excellency Moshir-ud-Dowleh, Governor-
General of Arabistan; they returned with His Excellency on the 16th
His Excellency the Governor-General, His Excellency the Shaikh of
Mohammerah and the Karsuzar proceeded to Basra on the 20th and returned
about three days later.
His Highness Parid-us Sultaneh, the Persian Commissioner of the Amdo-
rersian Oil Company at London, arrived on the 16th instant.

that Messrs. Strick Scott and Company cease to be the Managing Agents of
the Company with effect from the 1st January and that all communications

The head of the Revenue Department in Arabistan is said to entertain
hopes of persuading the Shaikh of Mohammerah to pay his original revenue
less lomans 25,000 per annum with effect from Nao Roz 1920. This would
leave payable a net annual revenue of about Tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. 50,000, an arrangement
which His Britannic Majesty’s Consul persuaded the Prime Minister Qawam-
us-Sultaneh to accept in 1921 but which the Shaikh subsequently repudiated.
Bakhtiari. The Khans appear to be quarrelling among themselves once
more and Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Zaffar has written that the state of Bakhtiari is about as bad
as it can be.

under Count de Mecquenem assisted by Messrs. Tescanne and Neuville have
recommenced work at Shush and intend to stay until Nao Roz.
BainfalL The scanty rainfall up to the middle of December caused
anxiety to the villagers, but a downpour took place on the 31st December
followed by more rain in the first two weeks of January. The cultivators are
busy ploughing and the price of wheat has fallen slightly.
PWW.—(24th December—20th January.) The Deputy Governor has
prohibited the carrying of arms in the town and has notified that arms
carried openly will be confiscated. He has reduced the pay of his Kurd
Sowars by Krans 20. r j u
Mirza Hassan, late Rais-i-Nazmiyeh, who was arrested by the Deputy
Governorm January 1922 in connection with the Mirza Mahmud case has
been released at Shushtar. ’
Shaikh Khalaf, the Shaikh of Mohammerah’s representative in the
neighbourhood, attacked Shaikh Farhan, the Chief of the A1 Kathir Arabs at
Ins camp between Kounak and Gumar on the night of the 18th-19th JanuarV
