French Archeological Mission.—The members of the French Archaeological
( Mission at Shush have closed down work for the season and arrived m Ahwaz on
the 9th April en route for Europe, On the whole the year s results have been dis
appointing.
Sheikh Mohamad Reza, Hujjat-uhlslam, head Mujtahid of Dizful, left Dizful
owing to his dissatisfaction with the Deputy Governor and arrived at Nasiri en
route for Mohammerah, etc. The Governor General sent Mirza Abdulla Khan,
Deputv Governor, to Ahwaz by car, accompanied by some Dizful notables and
Muftahids, to bring him back and after some days’ discussion and largely owing to
the good offices of the Sheikh of Mohammerah Mohamed Reza was induced to return
to Shushtar en route for Dizful. The case will, it is hoped, result in more friendly
relations betw r een the Governor General and the Sheikh of Mohammerah.
Dizful,
(18th March — 22nd April),
The condition of the tow r n is somewhat unsatisfactory. Considerable feeling
has been aroused against the Deputy Governor owing to the departure from the town
of Haji Sheikh Mohamed Reza, Hujjat-ul-Islam because the Deputy Governor
refused to take his advice to support Sadiq Khan which has resulted in the present
tribal upheaval and damage to crops.
Several small robberies have occurred in the towm, and the Police have not been
paid for a month, the Treasury being empty.
The balance of some Ts. 1,400 which w^as standing to the credit of the Baladiyeh
on arrival of the Deputy Governor in December last is also reported to have been
used up, and the Baladiyeh is much in arrears of pay. Unless the Deputy Governor
is able to collect revenue in advance or obtain money on loan it is difficult to see how
the pay of the Police and various departments can be met in the near future.
The long standing wish for*a doctor for Dizful has been gratified by the arrival
of Sub-Assistant Surgeon Ata Mohammad until recently employed in the Civil Hos
pital at Ahw r az. The Government of India having agreed to his local discharge
from Government service, he has been granted a salary, of Ts. 120 per mensem and
appointed as doctor to Dizful and Shushtar, He has a good reputation and it is to
be hoped will prove a success.
The district has been much disturbed during the period under report. The
Deputy Governor summoned Sadiq Khan, Mehr Ali Khan and Reza Khan to Dizful
and in the presence of His Majesty’s Vice-Consul and Hujjat-ul-Islam gave Sadiq
Khan written orders to the effect that he was appointed sole chief of the Sagwana
tribe. It was further agreed that Mehr Ali Khan should be handed over to Hussein
Khan with w r hom he would remain for 3 or 4 months until it was possible to arrange
peace between him and the relations of Sadiq Khan, and the latter promised the
Peputy Governor to try and arrange peace with Reza Khap, Sadiq Khan then
